In Between: Māris Čačka’s Solo Exhibition in Bialystok

The “In Between” solo exhibition by Māris Čačka, currently on display at the Im. Slendzińskich Gallery in Bialystok until 31 March 2024, offers a compelling exploration of the artist’s unique perspective on existence and personal involvement.

Curated by Ewa Pietruszko and Ewa Targońska, with coordination by Katarzyna Renata Hryszko, the exhibition delves into the concept of being “in between” – a liminal space filled with events, impressions, and people. Čačka eloquently articulates this theme, stating, “Time and time again I find myself in between, in a liminal space full of events, impressions and people.”

For Čačka, this state of “in between” encapsulates the essence of his presence and participation in life’s processes. It symbolizes a nuanced balance between various roles and experiences, where he oscillates between observation and action, introspection and engagement. Through his artwork, he seeks to capture the vibrancy of this intermediary space, where meaningful encounters and reflections converge to shape his artistic expression.

Māris Čačka’s “Other Notes” Exhibition at Krāslava Culture House

From February 13th to March 15th, an exhibition of Mara Čačka’s paintings titled “Other Notes” is on display at the Krāslava Culture House. The vibrant, large-format works, created in the artist’s unique technique blending graphics and painting, adorn the foyer and exhibition hall of the cultural venue.

Artist Māris Čačka describes his works as expressions of the most unimaginable states of the soul, commenting on people and situations through a poetic lens. Born in 1976 in Varakļāni, Čačka holds a Master’s degree in Fine Arts and a Ph.D. in Pedagogy from Daugavpils University. He currently leads the Daugavpils Mark Rothko Art Centre (now Rothko Museum) and has an extensive background in academia and arts administration.

On March 15th at 4:00 PM, there will be a meet-and-greet session with the artist, inviting all interested individuals to engage with Čačka and his artistic journey.

Seminar ‘Communication of Art and Creating Public Awareness of Contemporary Art’

On January 19th, the seminar “Communication of Art and Creating Public Awareness of Contemporary Art” took place in the seminar space of the Rothko Museum in Daugavpils. Māris Čačka discussed the importance of citizen involvement in art processes, particularly emphasizing communication about and with art, and highlighting the insufficient documentation of contemporary art in the region.

The presentation addressed:

  • The challenges of interpreting and communicating works of art for those outside the art field.
  • The impact of constant information distractions, often referred to as multitasking conditions, which significantly hinder the understanding of art messages.

The program featured concrete examples, stories, and reflections based on experiences with European art.

This event was organized by the association “Cita Daugavpils” as part of the “Cultural Sustainability Capacity Strengthening Program,” supported by the State Cultural Capital Foundation. The seminar was a collaboration with DVPI “Vienības nams” and DVPI “Rothko Museum.”

Māris Čačka’s ‘Sense of a Feeling’ Solo Exhibition in Warsaw

Māris Čačka’s latest solo exhibition, titled ‘Sense of a Feeling,’ will be showcased at Galeria Retroavangarda in Warsaw, Poland, from January 22 to March 31, 2024.”

“Sense of a Feeling” is the latest chapter in my ongoing autobiographic story that traces the individual physical and mental changes I experience as I grow into maturity. This complex personal account is expressed in the language of visual arts through a distinct visual vocabulary of fluid forms and shifting fields, which I consider the fittest means for my self-realisation.

My artistic reflections capture the sense of a feeling I extract from my lived experience or visualise the fleeting, inexplicable inklings that cannot be put into words. Sensations and the actions they trigger are the two principal catalysts for my artistic output – they set things in motion and also determine the outcome in terms of technique and implicit message.

I have a long record of partnerships with galleries and curators in different countries. The latest project in Retroavangarda Gallery is my first solo exhibition in Poland. It is ably curated by gallerist Anna Klos.

“LOOK BACK” exhibition by Sigita Daugule and Māris Čačka

The exhibition theme is condensed into two words – LOOK BACK – inviting the visitors to delve deep into the artworks on display and start reflecting on why they should be looking back or analysing what they see and drawing their conclusions. The artists give each visitor the freedom to interpret their canvasses and the stories they contain.

Both artists explore the outer environment, and their compositions reflect these ongoing pursuits. Although both are individual creators in their own right, several joint projects have given Daugule and Čačka a handful of themes they debate and ‘brainstorm’ together not only in artistic creation but also in associated conversations when they analyse the factors that accelerate or slow their creativity and find a common language to discuss vegetation, ecology and life itself – our greatest teacher and surrender.

Daugule’s method involves layering the colour with special pastes, varnishes and pigments. Her style dates back to the late 1990s and has been affected by both modern and postmodern art. The essence of Daugule’s paintings is chromatic harmony and narrative through figurative plots, along with modernistic colour masses and brushstrokes that she uses to create abstracted dramas.

Čačka’s art is a distinctive blend of painting and printmaking. He uses letterpress to anchor his technical approach to composition whilst documenting concrete and imagined conversations with the people around him. According to the artist, researching and sharing his visual stories gives him a meaningful visual experience he then shares with his viewer, enabling everyone to look back and reflect on their own life in a new, original form.

Latvian painter and art historian Sigita Daugule was born in Rīga in 1971. Today, she is one of the most respected and recognisable contemporary Latvian artists with a solid domestic and international profile.

Daugule’s paintings are featured in significant public collections, such as the Latvian National Museum of Art, the Swedbank Contemporary Art Collection, the Rothko Museum, the Zuzāns Collection and Luciano Benetton’s Imago Mundi. Her work is also held in multiple private collections in Latvia, Germany, Austria, Slovenia, Malta, Estonia, the USA, the UK, the Netherlands and beyond. To date, Daugule is the only Latvian artist to have earned the quartier 21 creative scholarship at the Viennese Museum Quarter.

Latvian artist, curator and exhibition producer Māris Čačka was born in Varakļāni in 1976. He has earned broad recognition and acclaim in Latvia and beyond with an original hybrid technique that bridges printmaking and painting.

Čačka’s work is featured in multiple public collections, such as the Latvian National Museum of Art, the EGLE Sanatorium Collection (Lithuania), Madona Local History and Art Museum, Balvi District Museum, Daugavpils Local History and Art Museum, the Cultural History Museum of Latgale in Rēzekne, Ventspils Museum, Talsi Museum and many more as well as in private collections in Latvia and internationally – in Austria, Belarus, Poland, UK, Lithuania, Monaco, Norway, Turkey, Germany and beyond.

“My Notes” solo exhibition by Māris Čačka

The Dusetos Art Gallery in Lithuania is thrilled to present a captivating solo exhibition titled “My Notes,” featuring the remarkable works of Latvian artist Maris Čačka. From August 26th to September 22nd, 2023, art enthusiasts and the community alike are invited to indulge in the world of Čačka’s art at the Cultural Centre Dusetos.

The “notes” of Māris Čačka are complex in terms of technology and content. They appear as imaginary dialogues between the author and his contemporaries about the meaning of the world.
Čačka’s creative output over the past couple of years maps significant finds on his individual artistic journey, leaving meaningful marks in the cultural landscape through numerous powerful exhibitions, where his prolific creative mind keeps developing new forms of expression emerging from earlier compositions. The artist continues to speak about the endless river of information bits and images inundating our perception in a world of countless suspended thoughts, erratic actions and overwhelming temptations.
This theme was especially strong in the author’s largest solo show to date, “Neuro‑Pathways” at the Rīga Art Space exhibition hall in February and March 2022, as well as in “Notes” displayed at the Daugavpils Secondary School of Design and Art “Saules Skola” January through April 2023. To quote from art historian Inga Šteimaine, curator of “Neuro‑Pathways”: “Čačka’s work is a palpable visual metaphor for this current state, when an abundance of goals and interferences break out into sudden and surprising reactions, fragmenting and traumatising our ideas, creating an ‘impossible’ technological mix, forgetting historical boundaries and forming unprecedented hybrids. Our ancient brains, which have humanised us by their tendency to perceive the ‘insignificant’, continue to do so today, but in the age of technology, the information flow becomes disproportionate and keeps ‘hurling’ our minds through thousands of neuro-pathways.”
How far do these pathways go, and what is their topography in the artist’s creative output? The question remains open, but one thing is clear – Čačka stays true to his chosen path and direction and keeps producing striking visual records of his artistic thought and subconscious insights.

Zane Melāne

“My work is constantly changing, and so am I, through new experiences, conversations and developments following up past initiatives. Nature, people and the myriad things happening all around me are the principal triggers for my creativity located at the juncture of painting and graphic art, although, inevitably, my spirits and creative processes are now materially dampened by the war in Ukraine,” admits the artist, Māris Čačka.
